In 1891, the revolt of the Khaz-push people – Iranian peasants and craftsmen – was suppressed. A few decades later, and a few years after the Bolshevik Revolution, the Soviet Armenian Film Studio reconstructed the event in an epic that was one of the early major productions in Armenia. The film offers a non-exotic, non-orientalist, Marxist view of class struggle in West Asia.

After the screening, Sergei Kapterev, Senior Researcher at the Research Institute of Cinema Art in Moscow, will review the film in the context of early Soviet cinema’s attempts to include in its narratives and images the political debate about the Soviet’s relation with the ‘East’.
